Google Gmail "Recent Mode"

We recently encountered an issue with a customer that has a cell phone configured to check his Gmail email account.  Whenever he read a message on the phone, the message did not arrive in the email client on his workstation.  We tried POP and IMAP, but neither remedied the situation.

To resolve the issue, we used Gmail's "Recent Mode".  To do this, we had to reset his username in the POP email client on his workstation from username@gmail.com to recent:username@gmail.com .

After configuring "Recent Mode", we had a new issue arise.  Now, all of the messages -- received AND sent -- are showing up in the inbox on the workstation.  To resolve this issue, we created an email message rule to automatically move any messages from the inbox that are from username@gmail.com to another folder that we created.

Now, he gets his messages on the phone AND the workstation.  No more missed email messages.

Flash on Android Devices

While out shopping today, we decided to play with the latest tablets. While watching the kids check out the tablets, I realized that the kids can only play primarygames.com and mostfungames.com on the Android devices. We tried it on the iPad, but since it will not play Adobe Flash content, they could not play any of the games on those sites.

This made me wonder about the other learning Web sites that they use at school. I quickly found that the majority of those site contain Flash content and simply do not work on the iOS devices -- iPod, iPad, and iPhone.

I asked my fourth-grade son which tablet he liked better and he said (holding a Samsung Android tablet), "This one because it will play the games!"

I get asked frequently by parents which tablet us best for their kids. I routinely tell them that it is a personal preference, but it appears that the Android devices do more of what my kids want to do online.

New Web Site

We have been working to make an online community for Edmonton and surrounding areas by including local weather, news, and a community calendar on our new Web site.

www.pringlecomputer.com

The calendar is maintained by the Edmonton-Metcalfe County Chamber of Commerce. The Google search box is optimized to search for local results first and filters out adult-oriented content, so you can feel more comfortable when your children perform online searches.

There is a toolbar at the bottom of the site that includes games and even allows for chatting with Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and Yahoo -- all from one location.

Set www.pringlecomputer.com as the home page in your Web browser and always have it at your fingertips.

Welcome!
